He was elected Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor in 1994 and was re-elected in 1998. Mark has been recognized for many achievements during his service as Governor, including dramatically increasing state security after 9/11, activating the most advanced urban-reform plan in the history of American K thru 12 public education, and personally overseeing the successful rescue operation of nine trapped coal miners in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He is also credited with directing a nationally acclaimed innovation effort across state government that increased accountability, reduced costs and improved citizen and customer care.
Subsequently, Mark served as president of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GPCC), one of the largest business-advocacy organizations in the United States. With more than 5,000 member companies and organizations, Mark oversaw the GPCC mission of promoting business development and economic growth in the tri-state Philadelphia region, advocated for sound public policy and enhanced the services and programs available to GPCC members. Through his leadership, the GPCC launched and now operates Select Greater Philadelphia, the region’s first, large-scale comprehensive effort to brand and market greater Philadelphia to a national and international audience as a first-tier place to do business. The effort is designed to attract new businesses to the region, encourage entrepreneurs to start their businesses here and retain area companies.
