Mark Chopko and
Michael O’Mara presented at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities on Feb. 6. Their presentation, “Legal Issues Updates: Maintaining Identity and Fidelity in a Changing Environment,” discussed the impact of changing Title IX rules, evolutions in the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on qualification of educational institutions for public programs, and a look at sponsorship issues. The ACCU was founded in 1899 and serves as the collective voice of United States Catholic higher education institutions.
Both Chopko and O’Mara have significant experience working with nonprofit, religious and higher education institutions throughout their legal careers. Both are members of the firm’s
Education Practice Group.
Chopko chairs the firm’s
nonprofit & religious organizations practice group, representing clients focusing on constitutional law and deflecting attempts by the government to regulate the activities of religious institutions. He is a member of the National Diocesan Attorneys Association, Religious Liberty Committee of the National Council of the Churches and Church Law Society. He also teaches Church-State Law at Georgetown University. Before joining Stradley Ronon, Chopko served for more than 20 years as general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
O’Mara is a member of the firm’s management committee and former
litigation department chair. He is a recognized trial lawyer who focuses his practice on complex and contentious litigation commercial disputes and frequently counsels nonprofit and educational institutions. He also teaches trial advocacy at Villanova Law School. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Business Leadership Organization for Catholic Schools and the Center for Autism. He is a member of the National Diocesan Attorneys Association.
