PHILADELPHIA – Stradley Ronon is pleased to announce the return of two accomplished white-collar defense lawyers, Michael J. Engle and Ashley E. Shapiro, as partners in the firm’s Philadelphia office. Both join the firm’s growing 70+ lawyer litigation department.
Engle and Shapiro have more than three decades of combined experience representing individuals, public officials and institutions in high-stakes investigations, criminal cases and other complex corporate compliance matters before federal and state courts as well as regulatory agencies.
“The return of Mike and Ashley is well-timed for Stradley Ronon as we continue to invest in and strengthen our white-collar capabilities as part of the firm’s overall strategic growth plan,” said Partner and Management Committee Member Michael D. O’Mara. “Both Mike and Ashley are longtime colleagues and well-established litigators who have an impressive reputation in the industry, and we are thrilled to have them back on our litigation team.”
Engle will co-chair the firm’s white-collar defense, internal investigations and corporate compliance practice group alongside New York Partner Steven D. Feldman, a former federal prosecutor and longtime white-collar defense lawyer. As veteran leaders of the group, Engle and Feldman will leverage their litigation expertise and insights to grow the practice, which handles some of the nation’s most sophisticated and highly publicized legal matters.
Engle, a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, has more than 20 years of experience handling all aspects of complex criminal cases, internal investigations and compliance matters. He routinely represents individuals and organizations across the country in connection with grand jury matters, government investigations and various forms of regulatory inquiries across a variety of industries, including financial services, securities, health care and environmental/energy. He also has extensive civil litigation experience, especially involving the defense of qui tam or False Claim Act complaints.
“My practice is coming full circle with my return to Stradley Ronon,” said Engle. “The opportunity to go back to the firm and reunite with friends is especially exciting as our clients know the quality and depth of talent at Stradley Ronon as well as its expansive array of legal service offerings.”
Shapiro is an accomplished litigator who has significant experience at both the federal and state levels across many jurisdictions, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. She focuses on white-collar criminal defense, internal investigations, corporate compliance matters and federal and state grand jury investigations. Shapiro’s work spans a range of sectors, including health care and life sciences, higher education, financial services and environmental and energy. She handles a variety of civil litigation matters, including the defense of False Claims Act or qui tam actions. Ashley also has extensive experience handling administrative proceedings, such as Title IX investigations and student disciplinary matters.
Stradley Ronon has grown significantly in the past two years with more than a dozen lateral partner hires. Most recently, the firm has added several high-profile attorneys, including Feldman in the New York office; Partner Jan M. Folena, a former supervisory assistant chief litigation counsel in the Enforcement Division of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, in the Washington, DC office and Partner Susan Gault-Brown, who chairs Stradley Ronon’s fintech practice, in the Washington, DC office.
